History & Mission
In 1997, BIG was founded to train UC Berkeley students to become fundamental value investors. Today, we now manage a $140,000 equity portfolio and are the single largest undergraduate feeder to hedge funds in the country.
Our fund seeks to generate higher risk-adjusted returns than the S&P 500 Index. We focus on fundamentally undervalued companies where our thesis is materially different from the market. We look for stocks where the market is missing something and consider the downside. Our best ideas are those with asymmetric returns, with high potential upside and low potential downside.

12 BIG Officers have been placed into Point72, Citadel, Temasek, and SIG in the past year. BIG makes up 10% of Citadel/Point72’s 2023 classes, and is their single largest feeder, higher than HYPSM.

Message From Our President
Entering Berkeley can feel overwhelming. With so many different opportunities, student organizations, and paths to choose from, finding a community that truly feels like home isn’t always easy. For me, BIG quickly became that place.
Through BIG, I found mentors who invested in my growth, an intern class that challenged and supported me, and alumni who were always willing to share their experiences and guidance. More than anything, BIG fostered an inclusive environment where curiosity was encouraged, questions were welcomed, and everyone’s story mattered.
At the core of BIG is our intern program. We’re looking for students who are curious, hungry to learn, and ready to tackle challenges head-on no matter their prior experience. Through our training, mentorship, and real exposure to investing, our interns build the technical and fundamental skills needed to turn ideas into conviction-driven trades.
But BIG is more than investing. It’s a community built on growth, collaboration, and shared ambition. Whether you’re just beginning to explore finance or already passionate about markets, there’s a place for you here.
